| Objectives | (BD2151) The first objective of the project will be to identify such questions and agree, within the context of UK constructional types, how they should be treated for the purposes of obtaining U-values. The second objective is to write a computer program that will calculate U-values. Preliminary work (to be completed before the start of this project) will draw up a specification for the software, saying what will be included and indicating its mode of operation, including incorporation of the conventions within the software. Within this project the software will be written and tested. | |
| Abstract | The recently-published EN standards give methods for the calculation of U-values in which the principles are clear but, partly because of the difficulty of covering all possibilities in international standards, questions have arisen on several details. The project is directly related to Priority Area 24 Development of regulations by providing documentation and software for use in the implementation of Part L. According to proposals published earlier this year, the revision of Part L of the Building Regulations will adopt the EN standards for the determination of U-values. Generally the calculation methods are more complex than those used hitherto in the UK, and the process should be automated so far as possible, both to assist those whose expertise lies elsewhere than in the details of the EN methods, and to ensure consistency of results. The beneficiaries are wide-ranging and include all those involved in the application of Part L: the manufacturing sector in determining appropriatespecifications of products that will achieve the U-value requirements; designers for specifying details of constructions, and in the building control process. Summary of results: This PiI project identified the isues involved in the application of European standards for the calculation of U-values , and developed a set of conventions that provide a link between the standards and typical UK constructions. The conventions were published and made available as computer software. This work improvedthe consistency of U-value calculations. | |
